12 Proven Health Benefits of Cinnamon*

1. Blood Sugar Control.

While it’s true that there’s no cure for Type 2 diabetes, cinnamon can be an effective tool in managing diabetes by controlling blood sugar.

According to Lori Kenyon Farley, a Certified Nutrition Consultant specializing in wellness, fitness and anti-aging and one of the experts behind Project Juice, cinnamon can help manage this Diabetes in two different ways. “It can reduce blood pressure and have a positive effect on blood markers for those with Type 2 diabetes,” she explains. Cinnamon can also reduce insulin resistance, which, Farley explains, “has been shown to lower fasting blood sugar levels by up to 29%, which can reduce the instance of Type 2 diabetes.”

Shane Ellison, MS, a medicinal chemist and founder of the Sugar Detox, explains how exactly this works. “(Cinnamon) works directly on the muscle cells to force them to remove sugar from the bloodstream, where it is converted to energy,” he says. “It’s even shown to work better than most prescription meds.”

The key is in increasing insulin sensitivity in the body, a sensitivity that, while present at birth for those without type 1 diabetes, slowly decreases as we age and consume more sugar. As a result, sugar floats around in the blood, causing diabetes and other health problems. “Cinnamon, which is completely non-toxic, repairs the receptors so they are once again responsive to insulin,” Ellison explains. “In time, sugar levels normalize due to an increase in insulin sensitivity.”

Add to this the fact that cinnamon has a naturally sweet taste that is devoid of sugar, making it a great addition to foods like plain yogurt as a dessert or snack, and you’ll soon see why we suggest it as a staple for the pantries of those with Type 2 diabetes.

2. Cinnamon helps to lower LDL Cholesterol and Triglycerides.

Even if you do not suffer from diabetes, you may want to include cinnamon in your diet for many of the same reasons as those who do.

As Carina Parikh, MScN, MSiMR, the holistic nutritionist for Kate Naumes ND Holistic Wellness in Dallas explains, the positive impact on Type 2 diabetes symptoms is due to a number of factors, notably “improving serum glucose, lowering fasting blood glucose, and reducing triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, and total cholesterol.” These are all benefits that can help even those not suffering from diabetes, including those with hereditary cholesterol worries or problems.

“(Cinnamon) also raises HDL (the “good”) cholesterol,” she explains. HDL cholesterol helps remove LDL cholesterol from the body.

And that’s not all. “Regular intake of cinnamon may also help to mitigate the effects of high-fat meals by slowing the increase in blood sugar post-meal,” says Parikh. This means that when cinnamon is added to your diet, the effects of occasional high-fat choices may not be quite as detrimental to your health as they would otherwise be.

3. Cinnamon has Anti-Fungal, Anti-Bacterial and Anti-Viral properties.

Cinnamon has been proven to fight fungal, bacterial, and viral elements in foods, thus preventing spoilage. It’s no surprise that in the Middle Ages, when food spoilage was far more frequent due to lack of refrigeration, many recipes, both sweet and savory, were flavored with the cinnamon.

But these properties of cinnamon go beyond than food seasoning and preservation. Consumers of cinnamon can benefit from these properties as well. Cinnamon can be used as part of a natural approach for: stomach flu, common cold, bronchitis, toenail fungus, candida, acne, and other bacterial related ailnments.

Denise Baron, a wellness educator and director of Ayurveda for Modern Living explains that cinnamon can help with all sorts of lung congestion issues. “It helps clear up mucus and encourages circulation.” But perhaps the most surprising use of cinnamon is in combatting viruses, and not just the common cold. “Research shows that cinnamon extract may help fight the HIV virus by preventing the virus from entering cells,” says Parikh. “Therefore, cinnamon extract could potentially contribute to the management of HIV.”

4. Cinnamon can help with the symptoms of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

This article cites an Israeli study done at the University of Tel Aviv that found sufficient evidence to conclude that Cinnamon can delay the effects of five aggressive strains of Alzheimer’s inducing genes. Another study also finds that orally administered Cinnamon extract has had good success in correcting Cognitive Impairment in Alzheimer’s Disease in Animal Models.

The latest findings indicate that two compounds found in cinnamon — cinnamaldehyde and epicatechin — may be effective in fighting Alzheimer’s. According to a study by Roshni George and Donald Graves in 2013, two scientists at UC Santa Barbara, Cinnamon has been shown to prevent the development of the filamentous “tangles” found in the brain cells that characterize Alzheimer’s

5. Cinnamon may have cancer preventive properties.

Research shows that Cinnamon oil is a promising solution in the treatment of Tumors, Gastric Cancers and Melanomas. Research studies show that sugar maybe causing or sustaining cancer cells and cinnamon may have a mitigating effect by controlling blood sugar levels in the body. Another study found good results with leukemia and lymphoma cancer cells.

Cinnamon in its various forms has two chemical constituents called Cinnamaldehyde  and Eugenol (From Cinnamon Oil). These have been used to develop nutraceuticals in this study that have proven fairly effective in fighting Human Colon Cancer Cells (Eugenol) and Human hepatoma cells (Cinnamaldehyde). So the evidence seems to suggest that Cinnamon is starving cancer cells of the sugar needed to sustain them. This University of Arizona study found that the cinnamaldehyde component of cinnamon was a potent colorectal cancer fighter.

6. Cinnamon has anti-inflammatory properties.

Consumption of cinnamon can reduce both systemic and specific inflammation. By adding cinnamon to a regular diet, this systemic inflammation can be reduced significantly.

Specific inflammation reduction means that consumption of cinnamon can help address certain types of pain and headaches, as well as arthritis pain. It plays a double role in this particular type of pain, according to Baron, as cinnamon can also boost circulation. “With circulation problems such as Raynaud’s syndrome or arthritis, this helps stimulate and push circulation to the joints,” she explains.

7. Cinnamon can help manage PCOS.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome is a problem with numerous symptoms that need to be managed, and cinnamon can be a key element of this management due to a number of characteristics.

First would be the management of insulin resistance in women with PCOS, which can contribute to weight gain. “A recent pilot study found that cinnamon reduced insulin resistance in women with PCOS,” explains Parekh, extending cinnamon’s recommended consumption from diabetes sufferers to anyone with an insulin resistance problem.

“Cinnamon can also help mitigate heavy menstrual bleeding associated with common conditions of female health, such as endometriosis, menorrhagia, and uterine fibroids.”

8. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

As a digestive cinnamon dramatically reduces the uncomfortable feelings associated with IBS especially the bloating. It does this by killing bacteria and healing infections in the GI tract and enabling the gastric juices to work normally. A Japanese study apparently showed it to cure ulcers but this cannot be verified. But if you do have stomach cramps or upsets, a cup of Cinnamon tea 2-3 times  per day will dramatically reduce the pain. Some people have asked if cinnamon give you gas. No it does not. It actually helps reduce gas and bloating.

9. Anti-oxidant.

With an ORAC value of 267536 μmol TE/100g (USDA 2007) cinnamon is one of the top seven anti-oxidants in the world. The suggestion is that Anti-oxidants reduce the formation of ” Free Radicals ” that cause cancer. This study found Cinnamon has sufficient anti-oxidant properties and makes for improved food palatability. This detailed Indian study (pdf) also found potential anti microbial and antioxidant properties of the volatile oils and oleoresins of cinnamon leaf and bark. But consider anti-oxidants as good for your whole body, repairing some of damage to virtually all parts of your body from skin to organs.

10. Tooth Decay and Gum Disease.

Again the anti-bacterial properties of Cinnamon play a crucial role in getting rid of harmful bacteria without damaging your teeth or gums. It’s one of the reasons that Cinnamon Oil is often used in chewing gums, mouthwashes, toothpaste and breath mints.

11. Weight Loss.

Cinnamon apparently has the effect of thinning your blood thereby increasing blood circulation. Increased blood flow generally boosts your metabolism, which is why it may be helpful in weight loss. This blood thinning property of Cinnamon also helps it in acting as an anti clotting agent especially for those suffering from heart disease. Care must be taken not to mix Cinnamon with other blood thinning medication. The main ingredient that causes your blood to thin is Coumarin which is present in high doses in Cassia Cinnamon (0.4%-0.8) but not in Ceylon Cinnamon (0.02%). However Coumarin causes liver damage. So taking Cassia Cinnamon for weight loss may end up causing liver damage.

12. Cognitive Development, Memory, Alertness, Depression. Mood Enhancer.

Ancient folklore says the smell of Cinnamon is the best cure for the winter blues. The only scientific evidence we can find to support this theory is this study by Dr. Bryan Raudenbush, Director of Undergraduate Research and associate professor of psychology at Wheeling Jesuit University in Wheeling, WV. The study found that the scent of Cinnamon reduced driver irritabilit.

 But Cinnamon may be an excellent cure for depression in a more roundabout way. There is some evidence that certain types of gut bacteria may make you more susceptible to depression. Cinnamon as a powerful stomach anti-bacterial may help you remove the bad bacteria. However since Cinnamon removes both bad and some good bacteria from your stomach you would be advised to repopulate your body with good bacteria by drinking a good probiotic or eating fermented food after taking Cinnamon. How to Include Cinnamon in Your Diet?

Even with all this evidence pointing to the wonders of cinnamon, you need to be very careful regarding how much to consume, because it might be toxic in large doses.

What Kind of Cinnamon Should Be Used?

Not all cinnamons were created equal, so pay attention what you buy. “Nearly all the cinnamon in the grocery stores and health food stores is a cousin of true cinnamon,” explains Christina Major, a MS Holistic Nutritionist and Herbalist and the Health Recovery Expert of Crystal Holistic Health.

Try to opt out for Cinnamomum verum, because it provides the health benefits due to its true potency. This is an expensive spice that is often substituted with Cinnamomum cassia. When you shop the supermarkets and local health food stores, you’ll likely see Cinnamomum cassia sold as Chinese or Cassia Cinnamon, whereas Cinnamomum verum will be sold as Ceylon cinnamon.

If you already have Cinnamon cassia on your shelf, you can try integrating it into your diet, but keep in mind a few important notes.

Likely, you will not find the same benefits outlined with regards to Cinnamon Verum hold true with Cassia. That might be a reason why home remedies don’t work.

How Much Cinnamon Should I Eat?

Once you’ve got your hands on Cinnamon Verum (a.k.a. Ceylon Cinnamon), the recommended dosage, according to the U.S. Department of Health, is up to 6 grams daily (2tsp) for 6 weeks or fewer, followed by one week of rest, while Turmeric can be taken then due to similar properties.

How Should Cinnamon Be Added to a Diet?

Cinnamon can be purchased in several forms, including ground powder, cinnamon sticks, cinnamon bark oil, or even capsules.

One teaspoon of cinnamon powder can be added to coffee, or sprinkled some over a fruit platter. It’s also great with baked sweet potatoes, oatmeals and apple cider.

Cinnamon doesn’t always have to be used alone. As one of the examples, it can be combined with ginger, turmeric and cardamom if a person has sluggish digestive system.

Cinnamon-scented candles can be used to boost brain function. Great homemade toothpaste can be made with nutmeg, baking soda and cinnamon essential oil.

Science Finds Ancient Spice Turmeric As Effective As 14 Drugs.

Turmeric is one the most thoroughly researched plants in existence today. Its medicinal properties and components (primarily curcumin) have been the subject of over 5600 peer-reviewed and published biomedical studies. In fact, our five-year long research project on this sacred plant has revealed over 600 potential preventive and therapeutic applications, as well as 175 distinct beneficial physiological effects.

This entire database of 1,585 ncbi-hyperlinked turmeric abstracts can be downloaded as a PDF at our Downloadable Turmeric Document page, and acquired either as a retail item or with 200 GMI-tokens, for those of you who are already are members and receive them automatically each month.

Given the sheer density of research performed on this remarkable spice, it is no wonder that a growing number of studies have concluded that it compares favorably to a variety of conventional medications, including:

Lipitor/Atorvastatin(cholesterol medication): A 2008 study published in the journal Drugs in R & D found that a standardized preparation of curcuminoids from Turmeric compared favorably to the drug atorvastatin (trade name Lipitor) on endothelial dysfunction, the underlying pathology of the blood vessels that drives atherosclerosis, in association with reductions in inflammation and oxidative stress in type 2 diabetic patients. [i]

[For addition curcumin and ‘high cholesterol’ research – 8 abstracts] Corticosteroids (steroid medications): A 1999 study published in the journal Phytotherapy Research found that the primary polyphenol in turmeric, the saffron colored pigment known as curcumin, compared favorably to steroids in the management of chronic anterior uveitis, an inflammatory eye disease.[ii]

A 2008 study published in Critical Care Medicine found that curcumin compared favorably to the corticosteroid drug dexamethasone in the animal model as an alternative therapy for protecting lung transplantation-associated injury by down-regulating inflammatory genes.[iii]

An earlier 2003 study published in Cancer Letters found the same drug also compared favorably to dexamethasone in a lung ischaemia-repurfusion injury model.[iv] [for additional curcumin and inflammation research – 52 abstracts]

Prozac/Fluoxetine & Imipramine (antidepressants): A 2011 study published in the journal Acta Poloniae Pharmaceutica found that curcumin compared favorably to both drugs in reducing depressive behavior in an animal model.[v] [for additional curcumin and depression research – 5 abstracts]

Aspirin (blood thinner): A 1986 in vitro and ex vivo study published in the journal Arzneimittelforschung found that curcumin has anti-platelet and prostacyclin modulating effects compared to aspirin, indicating it may have value in patients prone to vascular thrombosis and requiring anti-arthritis therapy.[vi] [for additional curcumin and anti-platelet research]

Anti-inflammatory Drugs: A 2004 study published in the journal Oncogene found that curcumin (as well as resveratrol) were effective alternatives to the drugs aspirin, ibuprofen, sulindac, phenylbutazone, naproxen, indomethacin, diclofenac, dexamethasone, celecoxib, and tamoxifen in exerting anti-inflammatory and anti-proliferative activity against tumor cells.[vii] [for additional curcumin and anti-proliferative research – 15 abstracts]

Oxaliplatin (chemotherapy drug): A 2007 study published in the International Journal of Cancer found that curcumin compares favorably with oxaliplatin as an antiproliferative agenet in colorectal cell lines.[viii] [for additional curcumin and colorectal cancer research – 52 abstracts]

Metformin (diabetes drug): A 2009 study published in the journal Biochemitry and Biophysical Research Community explored how curcumin might be valuable in treating diabetes, finding that it activates AMPK (which increases glucose uptake) and suppresses gluconeogenic gene expression (which suppresses glucose production in the liver) in hepatoma cells.

Interestingly, they found curcumin to be 500 times to 100,000 times (in the form known as tetrahydrocurcuminoids(THC)) more potent than metformin in activating AMPK and its downstream target acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC). [ix]

Microwave ovens are convenient, but it has been proven that they alter food chemistry in a way that it has an adverse impact on your blood, cholesterol balance and immune system. A sprain is the over-stretching or tearing of a ligament due to a mechanical force resulting in damage. Ligaments are the type of connective tissue that holds joints together. A severe sprain can inhibit the ligament from properly controlling the integrity of a joint. The first step after a sprain injury is to take any weight or physical stress off of the joint. The most common place for sprains to happen is the ankle. Sprains also frequently occur in the wrists, knees and less common in shoulders.

Treatment for common strains falls into two categories: the first aid, which is considered the short term; and the healing phase that consists of recovery and rehabilitation.

What you need to remember during the first aid following sprain injury. They are easy to remember with the RICE acronym.

R – REST – Very important thing to do in the treatment of a sprain is to get weight and physical stress off of the injured joint. Clearly, you do not want to use the joint until healing of the sprain can occur.

I – ICE – Ice the sprained joint for 15 minutes immediately after the injury. Ice helps to reduce inflammation and pain. Repeat reapplying ice every several hours. Never keep the ice for more than 15 minutes.

C – COMPRESS – Wrap the joint tightly in order to prevent unnecessary joint movement and support some weight. After wrapping tightly, make sure to check circulation below the wrap. You can lightly pinch, or squeeze the area distant to a wrapped part. The area should turn to a normal color within seconds. If the area stays white, loosen the wrap.

E – ELEVATE – Within the first few days, keep the sprained area elevated above the level of the heart. This helps to avoid swelling from build up. Increased hydration (water intake), for the body to respond to the damage caused by the sprain.

Always consult your medical doctor to perform additional examination to rule out possible fractures or other soft tissue damage.

For long term care of a sprain injury, very important factor is to maintain mobility (to avoid joint derangement or fusion) and maintain strength. This is better done under a supervision of a specialist.

Proper nutrition is very important for fast recovery and healing. There are many vitamins and minerals that are necessary for proper ligament strength.

According to American Pain Foundation, neck pain is the third most common type of pain. Over 70% of people had experienced symptoms of neck pain at some point in their lives.

Neck pain may be elicited by numerous causes such as strain injury, degenerative disc disease, pinched nerve, infection, fracture, swollen lymph nodes and even cancer.

Follow these guidelines when you experience acute incident of neck pain:

  • Keep your head up at all times. When you allow your head to drop as in reading, knitting, sewing and performing desk tasks, you place further strains on the already over stretched or injured tissues.
  • Maintenance of good posture is essential. Begin by  lifting your chest up and partially tucking your chin in.
  • Do not roll your head around and avoid quick movements especially turning the head quickly.
  • Avoid those positions and movements that initially caused our problems. You must allow some time for healing to take place.
  • Do not sleep with more pillows than necessary. If you are comfortable with one pillow, then use only one. The content of the pillow should adjustable in order to provide a proper support and comfort for your neck.
  • When you remain uncomfortable at night, you may benefit from a supportive roll.
  • Do not sleep face down, as this places greater strain on the neck.
  • Do not “stretch your pain out”. Neck and upper back pain may feel muscular in nature, but can have a different nature. Self stretching may cause further injury n the deeper ligaments and joint tissues are involved.
  • Find positions of “centralization”, where your symptoms are closer to your spine. Avoid positions that cause the symptoms to move further away from your spine and down to your arm.
  • Ice the area frequently (every 2 hours for 15 minutes) if the pain fairly constant in nature and area is inflamed. Heat will make inflammation and swelling worse.
  • If no relieve from pain is achieved within first two days, consult with your health care practitioner

Vitamin D Deficiency Linked With Severe Asthma in Children

Children with severe therapy-resistant asthma (STRA) may have poorer lung function and worse symptoms compared to children with moderate asthma, due to lower levels of vitamin D in their blood, according to a study by researchers at King’s College London.

The team found that lower levels of vitamin D may cause structural changes in the airway smooth muscles of children with STRA, making breathing more difficult. This study, published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, provides important new evidence for possible treatments.

The study was carried out by researchers from the MRC & Asthma UK Center in Allergic Mechanisms of Asthma at King’s, The Royal Brompton Hospital and the National Heart and Lung Institute (NHLI) at Imperial College London. The scientists said the findings will help develop new treatment strategies for children suffering from difficult-to-treat asthma, who account for up to 10 percent of young asthma patients.

While most children with asthma can be successfully treated with low doses of corticosteroids, about five to 10 percent of asthmatic children do not respond to standard treatment. Children with STRA experience more asthma episodes and asthma-related illnesses, and require more health care services than their treatment-receptive peers.

The researchers enrolled 86 children in the study, including 36 children with STRA, 26 with moderate asthma and 24 non-asthmatic controls, and measured the relationships between vitamin D levels and lung function, medication usage and symptom exacerbations. Children requiring complex bronchoscopies for the study were treated in the pediatric intensive care unit at Royal Brompton. The researchers also examined tissue samples from the airways of the STRA group to evaluate structural changes in the airway’s smooth muscle.

The team found children with STRA had significantly lower levels of vitamin D, as well as greater numbers of exacerbations, increased use of asthma medications and poorer lung function compared to children with moderate asthma and non-asthmatic children. Airway muscle tissue mass was also increased in the STRA group.

However, the researchers cautioned that children should not be given vitamin D supplements without first consulting a general practitioner. They emphasized that this is an early study, and larger studies will need to be conducted to verify these results.

What is the Asyra?

How does it work?

The Asyra software contains digitally-encoded information relating to a wide range of health factors that is output by the Asyra hardware as electromagnetic signals during testing.

Using a simple low voltage circuit created by holding two brass cylinders or electrodes, the response of the body to those signals is recorded by measuring changes in the electrical resistance of the skin.

Is that really possible?

Running an Asyra test is an example of a process that is called bio-energetic testing.

What is meant by ‘energetic’ in the context of health testing?

When we obtain responses from a bioenergetic testing device, the information is a mixture of commentary on the physical, chemical, emotional and mental state of the body/mind. Indeed, part of the skill of the practitioner of bioenergetic testing is to consider and interpret the information that comes from the system and to know how to proceed from there.

Is the Asyra a diagnostic device?

It is helpful to be really clear about definitions here. ‘Diagnosis’ is derived from a Greek word meaning to ‘discern or distinguish’. In the modern medical context, this means to take a set of symptoms presented by a patient and state that they fit better into the category for disease A, disease B or perhaps disease C. In this way the medical practitioner can choose appropriate treatment, and it is important that he gets it right because the treatment for disease A might have quite negative consequences for a disease B patient, especially if it is surgical.

Asyra testing does not in this sense diagnose. It presents a completely individualized set of responses at one point in time to the set of challenges that were included in the test. The information can often be used to help support a traditional diagnosis, but at the same time, the information may suggest a course of action that is not in line with the normal recommendations for that diagnosis.

So what exactly do the results signify?

The one definite and unchanging aspect of interpreting the test results is as follows: if an item shows up as unbalanced (usually a red or yellow indication against the item in the remedy list), then the body will benefit from further exposure to the informational signature of that item.

In different words, the body has indicated some kind of reaction measured by galvanic skin response to a particular informational signature, and that further exposure to that informational pattern will assist the body in better dealing with it another time.

The Asyra test is identifying a set of items that the body / mind system can benefit from learning better adaptation to, and these may be from a very wide variety of types. Food items, pathogens, emotional patterns, responses to color and pharmaceutical agents to name but a few.

How do we use this to help get people better?

We can proceed down a number of paths. Firstly, we can follow the recommendation – provide the informational signatures highlighted by the test back to the body. The Asyra provides us two ways of doing this: by creating an imprinted informational remedy (the same concept as a homeopathic remedy), and by passing the information back to the body using a safe low-energy laser.
