Sports Injury chiropractorThe benefits of putting your body through physical exercises that sports bring is a definite plus in our local area. While many people in the greater New York area are turning to strenuous activities like rock climbing, skateboarding, or other extreme sports like these. More common sports our local citizens are participating in are things like basketball, baseball, soccer, and even hockey. Even though these activities are great for the body as far as exercise, they do come with some significant risks to the body and injuries occur. If you are someone who is active in sports, it’s a good chance that you have injured yourself at some point or another. Here are some of the injuries involved in sports that our healthcare team can assist you with.

Sports Injuries Strains and Sprains

Across all spectrums of sports that anyone can play, strains and sprains are the most common sports injuries your body can experience. Sprains are injuries to the ligaments which are the tough bands that connect the person’s bones to their joints. Strains are injuries that occur in the muscle tendons or fibers. These anchors the muscles to the bones.

These types of injuries vary from minor to severe, however, even minor injuries can sometimes take weeks to heal. Initial onsets of sprains and strains can be treated with rest, ice, compression and elevation of affected areas.

Expect the Unexpected

There are multiple ways a person can become injured when playing both a high impact sport or a friendly game. These injuries are not limited to:

  • Fractures
  • Knee injuries
  • Back injuries
  • Achilles injuries
  • Dislocations
  • Rotator cuff injury

One can never be certain as to what injury their body will become susceptible to during game time, however, it is crucial to make sure you are careful and watchful of yourself and other players to minimize injury. One wrong step or a wrong move from another player could result in a tragic accident that could have you lying on your back for the next three weeks. Make sure you have prepared yourself as best you know how during game time.

What To Do Before You Play

One of the best things someone can do to ensure to eliminate bodily injury on the field or court is to make sure their body is ready to play. This means your body needs to be in the best physical condition that it can be in. Strengthening exercises are important to keep the body healthy and injury-free when you play sports is important, make sure to wear the correct gear for the sport you are playing, increase your flexibility by stretching and warming your muscles up before the game starts, be safe while the game is played, and definitely do not try to play through an injury.

Injuries occur on the field and it is important to understand the right techniques to prevent your body from experiencing these injuries. However, no matter how careful you are, there is still a good chance that you could experience injury. When this happens, excuse yourself from the field and assess your injury.
