TL;DR Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) is a non-invasive test that measures minerals and toxic metals in a small hair sample. It reflects long-term patterns in metabolism, stress, thyroid and adrenal function, and toxic exposure that standard blood work often misses. At Atlant Chiropractic in Midtown East, NYC, we use HTMA (processed by Trace Elements, Inc.) alongside functional medicine testing to design targeted nutrition, detox and lifestyle plans, never as a stand-alone diagnosis, but as a powerful map of your body’s biochemistry over the last 3–4 months. Atlant Chiropractic, Trace Elements

What Is Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA)?

Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) is a laboratory test that measures the levels of key nutritional minerals and toxic metals in a small sample of scalp hair. Atlant Chiropractic

Unlike routine blood work, which reflects a snapshot in time, hair tissue shows how your body has been handling minerals and metals over the past few months. Hair is formed from cells supplied by the bloodstream during growth. As it grows, minerals and metals are deposited and then “locked in” as the hair hardens. Trace Elements

At Atlant Chiropractic, we use HTMA through Trace Elements, Inc. (TEI), a CLIA-licensed laboratory that has processed over 1.5 million HTMA specimens. Trace Elements  This gives us a highly detailed, computer-generated report that we interpret through the lens of functional medicine, not just numbers on a page.

If you want the quick overview of the test itself, see our dedicated service page:

Why Use Hair Instead of Blood?

There’s a reason agencies and researchers have used hair analysis for decades to study toxic metals and environmental exposure.  Atlant Chiropractic,  Science Direct, AK Journals

Hair reflects longer-term patterns

Blood is tightly regulated by your body. Many metals leave the blood quickly and are stored in tissues like liver, bone—and hair. Studies show that hair can be a useful biomarker of exposure to several toxic trace metals (such as lead, mercury, arsenic and others), especially in environmental and occupational settings. ScienceDirect, Pub Med

Non-invasive and easy to collect

A small sample (about a tablespoon) of hair from the back of the head is all that’s required. No needles, no special transport conditions. This makes HTMA ideal for children, needle-phobic patients, and re-testing over time. Trace Elements Collection Instructions

High mineral concentration

Mineral levels in hair are often 10–100 times higher than in blood, which allows more sensitive detection of both deficiencies and excesses. Trace Elements

Of course, like any lab test, HTMA isn’t perfect. Hair can be affected by external contamination and by how the sample is prepared. That’s why we:

  • Use a lab that does not pre-wash hair with harsh solvents (to preserve key electrolytes like sodium and potassium). Trace Elements

  • Provide detailed collection instructions to avoid medicated shampoos, dandruff shampoos with zinc or selenium, recent hair dyes, or externally contaminated hair. What Does HTMA Actually Measure?

A standard HTMA from Trace Elements measures:

Nutritional minerals (examples):

  • Calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium

  • Zinc, copper, phosphorus, manganese, chromium, selenium

  • Iron and other trace minerals

Toxic metals (examples):

  • Lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic, aluminum, nickel and others

Beyond individual numbers, the real power of HTMA is in the ratios and patterns:

  • Calcium : Potassium – often used as an indicator of thyroid hormone effect at the tissue level

  • Sodium : Magnesium – reflects adrenal stress and sympathetic “fight-or-flight” drive

  • Calcium : Magnesium, Sodium : Potassium – linked to blood sugar balance, cardiovascular stress, and cellular energy production

Please copy of the Sample Report (Here). These patterns help us understand:

  • Metabolic rate (fast vs slow oxidizer)

  • Thyroid and adrenal stress at the tissue level

  • Tendency toward anxiety or burnout

  • How your body uses carbohydrates and handles blood sugar

  • Susceptibility to inflammation, cardiovascular strain and immune imbalance

We then correlate this with your symptoms, history and other tests, like bloodwork and bioenergetic testing such as Asyra / Qest4, to see the full picture.

Who Might Benefit from HTMA?

In our Midtown East NYC practice, Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis is especially helpful for people who:

  • Feel fatigued, wired-and-tired or “burned out”

  • Struggle with anxiety, low mood, brain fog or poor sleep

  • Have stubborn thyroid symptoms despite “normal” labs – see our post on thyroid root causes:
Stop Blaming Your Thyroid – Understanding the Real Triggers Behind Thyroid Dysfunction

  • Have digestive issues and suspect poor nutrient absorption

  • Have a history of heavy metal exposure (old amalgam fillings, industrial work, second-hand smoke, contaminated water, etc.)

  • Want a more personalized supplement plan instead of guessing

  • HTMA is a perfect companion when creating personalized peptide therapy plan

Because trace minerals influence nerve conduction, hormone signaling, energy production and detoxification, imbalances can show up as seemingly unrelated issues—joint pain, headaches, blood pressure changes, menstrual symptoms, or difficulty bouncing back from stress. Atlant Chiropractic

HTMA is not a magic crystal ball. But in the right hands, it can be a powerful roadmap for targeted nutrition and detox strategies.

How We Use HTMA at Atlant Chiropractic

At Atlant Chiropractic, HTMA is never ordered in isolation. It’s part of a functional medicine framework designed to identify root causes, not just calm symptoms. Atlant Chiropractic

Here’s how the process typically works:

1. Comprehensive Functional Medicine Intake

During your functional medicine visit, we review your:

  • Health timeline (from early life through now)
  • Symptom clusters (thyroid, gut, autoimmunity, mood, energy, pain, etc.)
  • Diet, lifestyle, stress, toxin and medication exposure

This helps us decide whether HTMA, Asyra / bioenergetic testing, or other labs are the most appropriate next step.

2. Simple Hair Collection

You’ll receive clear written and video instructions, similar to those on our HTMA service page:
Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) – Test Overview & Collection Instructions.

We ask you to avoid anti-dandruff shampoos with zinc or selenium and to wait at least six weeks after hair dye. The sample is taken close to the scalp from the back of the head so it’s usually not visible. Trace Elements

3. Laboratory Analysis at Trace Elements, Inc.

Your sample is sent to Trace Elements, Inc., a specialty lab that:

  • Uses validated analytical methods for multi-element hair testing
  • Does not pre-wash hair with harsh solvents that can alter mineral levels
  • Provides detailed interpretive reports based on decades of research

Which Labs Perform Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis?

Not every hair mineral test is created equal. A handful of labs process the majority of HTMA specimens in the US, and the quality of the analysis depends heavily on which one runs your sample.

The main names you’ll come across are Trace Elements, Inc. (TEI), Doctor’s Data, and Analytical Research Labs (ARL). They differ in wash protocols, reference ranges, and how much interpretive detail comes back with the report.

At Atlant Chiropractic, we use Trace Elements, Inc. specifically because:

  • They do not pre-wash hair with harsh solvents, which can strip out sodium and potassium before the sample is even tested
  • They’re CLIA-licensed and have processed over 1.5 million HTMA specimens
  • Their reports include the ratio and pattern data we rely on for functional interpretation, not just raw mineral counts

4. Interpretation & Personalized Plan

Once results are back, we walk you through:

  • Which minerals are low, high or out of balance
  • Which toxic metals (if any) are elevated
  • How your patterns correlate with your symptoms, thyroid and adrenal stress, and digestive function
  • Then we design a step-by-step plan that may include:
  • Food and macro/mineral adjustments
  • High-quality, targeted supplements (rather than “throwing the whole cabinet” at you)
  • Detox and drainage support
  • Nervous system and stress-regulation strategies

How to Interpret Your HTMA Results

Reading an HTMA report isn’t about eyeballing which minerals are “high” or “low.” The real information is in the patterns.

Metabolic rate (oxidation type) Your calcium-to-phosphorus ratio is one of the main markers we use to classify metabolism as a fast or slow oxidizer. Fast oxidizers tend to burn through nutrients quickly and often feel anxious or wired. Slow oxidizers tend toward fatigue and sluggish metabolism. Neither is “better,” but each points toward a different nutrition and supplement strategy.

The four ratios we watch most closely

  • Calcium : Potassium — thyroid hormone effect at the tissue level. A skewed ratio often shows up before thyroid bloodwork does.
  • Sodium : Magnesium — adrenal stress and sympathetic (“fight-or-flight”) drive. This is frequently the first pattern we see in people who describe themselves as wired-and-tired.
  • Calcium : Magnesium — blood sugar handling and cardiovascular stress.
  • Sodium : Potassium — cellular energy production and general stress resilience.

What “elevated” or “depleted” actually means A mineral being outside range doesn’t automatically mean you need to supplement it or avoid it. Elevated calcium in hair, for example, can sometimes reflect calcium being pulled out of tissue rather than too much calcium in the diet. This is why we never hand someone a report and a supplement list without a conversation. The pattern across all the minerals, not any single number, is what drives the plan.

We walk through your specific results line by line during your review appointment, no black-box interpretation.

This plan integrates with your overall chiropractic and functional medicine care, described more fully on our main Chiropractic and Functional Medicine pages.

Is Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis Scientific? Addressing the Controversy

If you’ve researched HTMA online, you’ve probably seen two very different narratives:

  • Enthusiasts who treat HTMA as the answer to everything
  • Skeptics who dismiss it as “unproven” or “useless”

As usual, the truth sits in the middle.

What the Research Supports

  • International programs coordinated by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have used hair to assess exposure to trace element pollutants, concluding that hair trace element composition is a suitable indicator of certain exposures. SpringerLink
  • Multiple scientific reviews describe human hair as a useful biomarker of occupational and environmental exposure to many toxic trace metals—though not all, and not for every situation. ScienceDirect,  Pub Med
  • The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has published extensive data on toxic metals in human hair as part of environmental monitoring programs. EPA NEEPA, Google

What the Cautionary Reviews Say

Agencies such as the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) emphasize that hair analysis:

  • Should not be used as the sole basis for diagnosing “environmental illness”
  • Is less reliable for some metals and can be affected by sample contamination and lab methods
  • Is most appropriate when used for population screening and exposure assessment, not as a stand-alone clinical diagnostic tool.

Our Approach

We agree with both sides in context:

  • HTMA is not a replacement for standard medical testing, imaging, or emergency care.
  • We never diagnose a disease based only on an HTMA report.
  • We do use HTMA patterns, combined with your history, exam, blood work and other labs, to guide more intelligent nutrition, detoxification, and lifestyle strategies.

In other words: HTMA is a powerful map, not the destination.

FAQ – Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA)

Can HTMA diagnose my condition (thyroid disease, autoimmune disease, etc.)?

No. HTMA cannot diagnose specific diseases. It shows patterns of mineral balance and toxic metals that can influence thyroid, adrenal, immune and nervous system function. We always interpret HTMA in combination with your symptoms, exam, and other lab tests.

Is HTMA accurate?

When hair is collected properly and analyzed by a reputable lab that uses standardized preparation and does not over-wash the sample, HTMA can provide reliable information about mineral levels and certain toxic metals over time.

However, like any test, it has limitations and must be interpreted by a clinician with experience.

Is a hair follicle test the same as HTMA?

No. “Hair follicle test” usually refers to drug testing, which screens for substances like THC, cocaine, or opiates using a different lab process entirely. Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) measures nutritional minerals and toxic metals, not drug metabolites. If you’re looking for a drug screening, HTMA is not the right test, we don’t offer that service.

How much does Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis cost?

The test itself typically runs $200 – $450, depending on whether it’s ordered as a stand-alone panel or bundled with a functional medicine consultation. Most patients get more value from bundling it, since interpretation is where the real clinical decisions happen, not the raw lab numbers.

During your intake, we’ll walk through exact pricing based on whether HTMA is being ordered alone or alongside other functional medicine testing.

How is this different from a blood test for minerals?

Blood reflects what is happening right now and is tightly regulated. Many minerals can appear “normal” in blood even when they are depleted or mismanaged at the tissue level. Hair, on the other hand, reflects an average of several months of mineral handling and exposure. Atlant Chiropractic

We use both, depending on the question we’re asking.

Is HTMA safe for children?

Yes. HTMA is non-invasive and needle-free, which makes it especially useful for children, including those with sensory issues or fear of blood draws. We still follow the same careful collection and interpretation process and may pair HTMA with other pediatric-appropriate testing when needed. Science Direct

How often should I repeat HTMA?

This depends on your case. Many patients re-test every 4–6 months when we’re actively working on mineral repletion and detoxification. Once patterns stabilize, we may check less frequently or only when symptoms or life circumstances (stress, pregnancy, toxin exposure) change significantly.
