Sport drinks are very popular in America and used by almost every athlete in with good reason. They all claim to restore electrolytes and boost physical performance, which is an accurate statement, but what manufacturers do not tell you is that sports drinks are not for everyone. For most athletes, water will do just fine when they need to quench their thirst and rehydrate their body.

The electrolytes and carbohydrates that they contain are crucial for post-workout muscle recovery, but sports drinks also contain high amounts of processed sugars, artificial flavors and chemical additives (colors, etc.) – these ingredients your body can do without. Next time you pick a sports drink, carefully examine the label additional ingredients. These types of drinks are specially designed for people who spend at least an hour a day working out; their body lose a lot of electrolytes and the quickest way to replace these is with a sports drink because their high sodium content helps increase the absorption rate of the electrolytes.
